Two World Vision staff members were killed and three were wounded when they were caught in the crossfire between clashing security forces in Sudan’s Darfur region on July 4. The organization has temporarily suspended programs throughout South Darfur.
Please pray with us for the victims and their families, for children affected by the conflict, and for humanitarian workers in the most difficult places in the world.
Suggested prayer points
Pray for families of those killed and injured.
In spite of the dangers, staff members heed God’s call to serve the poor in difficult circumstances. Their family members support that commitment and today are grieving loss and injury. Pray for God’s comfort and healing to fill the hearts of mourning family members.
Lord, we trust You to heal those recovering from the attack and help them return to the work You called them to do. Reveal Yourself to family members in their moments of deepest sorrow. Comfort them in their distress.
Pray for children affected by conflict.
About 1 million people will lose access to food aid, health facilities, water and sanitation services, and Child-Friendly Spaces while World Vision programs are suspended. Many of them are children uprooted by violence or struggling with disease or malnutrition. Pray they may receive adequate food as well as physical and emotional protection.
Dear Jesus, You give us the supreme example of how to care for children. In the tension of conflict and absence of resources, raise up people to care for and protect children in Your name. Help them to flourish despite the great need.
Pray for the warring factions.
Tribal clashes and violent confrontations between rival armed groups have flared up in the past year. Violence in Darfur has displaced more than 300,000 Sudanese since January. Pray for humility that will lead to peace.
Lord, You instructed us to “…pray for those who persecute you.” (Matt. 5:44) Have mercy on the warring groups. Help them resolve their differences and cooperate with efforts to create peaceful communities for children and familiess.
Pray for humanitarian workers in difficult places around the world.
The world is becoming more hostile for humanitarian workers. As of June, 62 aid workers had been killed in 69 incidents this year alone. Pray for improved security and steadfast commitment to serve children and families in unstable circumstances.
Heavenly Father, those whom You have called to help know it at the core of their being. In spite of great risk in many places, help them remain steadfastly committed to the work You have set before them and protect them as they work.
